A safe place called home

Abuse is an oft repeated term in the lexicon of an average Indian woman, a demon to be dealt with whether she is a resident of a rural hinterland or an urban metropolis. Yes, the situation is bad girls. So, what are you going to do about it?

The harsh truth is that risks like these can never be eliminated entirely. However, for urban single women living on their own in metros, they can definitely be reduced.

For starters, do not compromise when it comes to your living space. Gut wrenching stories of women being attacked while returning home to their PG accommodations in poorly lit and unsafe neighbourhoods and such unprotected dwellings being broken into by miscreants, are all too familiar.

Ensure the following before renting a living space:

Last mile connectivity — The importance of good “last mile connectivity” can never be over emphasised. The roads leading to your dwelling must be well-lit and easily accessible so that the cab can drop you till your very door step at night and nobody can lurk in dark corners waiting to spring a nasty surprise. Always do a night time recce visit of the living space you are considering moving into, to get a feel of how that safe that area is at night.

Neighbourhood — It is not enough to live in a safe house, the immediate neighbourhood must be considered too. An apartment complex with security features is the safest bet as opposed to PG dwellings in shady lanes and neighbourhoods. Stand-alone buildings without security is a strict no-no!

Network systems — Having the option of attending certain late evening meetings over skype, the convenience of taking con-calls from home during odd hours when required, eliminates the need to stay back late at work and then having to worry about reaching home safe. So, ensure that you choose a living space where such facilities can be made available if and when required.

Service tie-ups — Manged rental options today have tie ups with essential service providers like food delivery, laundry services etc. so that one has the option of getting these services delivered in the safety and comfort of your home instead of having to sometimes step out for it during late hours.

So, girls do your home-work well when you go house hunting in the city. Be informed………stay safe.
